Fifty-three-year-old Mickey Charles, an editor in Hollywood,
returns to his boyhood roots in Austin, Texas, to attend a
high school reunion. While visiting his parents, who still
live in the neighborhood of Tarrytown where he grew up, he
discovers memorabilia from his 1962 West Austin Little League
All-Star baseball team. Among the teammates in a photograph
he inspects, was the Jackie Robinson of their league,
Willie Veils, who Mickey befriended and came to know as
a true companion during their journey through a special
summer of dreams. The sight of the photograph causes
Mickey to reminisce on the interracial relationship that
changed his perspective and this memory is the crux of
the story,
AROUND THE HORN.
